Overview

Using NIMS/ICS guidelines, the Rail Incidents: Preparedness and Response for Emergency Managers course prepares participants to lead and manage hazardous material incidents and flammable/combustible liquids incidents involving transportation using NIMS/ICS and NRF guidelines and structures. 

Prior to enrollment, participants should be trained to the Hazardous Materials Awareness level as certified by their Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and have completed NIMS/ICS300. Certificates do not need to be submitted.

This training course is funded through the PHMSA ALERT Grant

Description

Course Objectives:

  • Identify the required forms and emergency operations center considerations for a rail incident under Incident Command System (ICS) through real-world case studies and instructor-led discussion. 
  • Identify and describe the duties of personnel under the branches of ICS. 
  • Describe the types of containers used to transport hazardous materials in all modes of transportation including highway, rail, and intermodal. 
  • Summarize the resources available if a local jurisdiction is overwhelmed by a surface transportation incident; and
  • Discuss the effective application of NIMS/ICS principles during a railroad incident response.

Important Details

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Closed-toe footwear, gloves, and long pants are required. Safety vests will be provided onsite. 

Please advise the instructor(s) of any pre-existing medical condition(s) that may preclude you from participating in any field exercise. Stay hydrated and alert.

Be at the site by 12:50 PM for registration. Class will begin promptly at 1:00 PM.

Depending on registration and training needs, the training schedule may be adjusted prior to event. 

Note: There will need to be a minimum of 20 registered attendees for the emergency management session to be held.
