The Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) Hazardous Materials Management Team presents Railroading 101, providing an overview of:
- The UPRR system
- Pre-planning
- Railroad equipment
- Locomotives
- Tank cars (pressure and non-pressure)
- Contacting the railroad
- Safety while operating on or near the railroad
- Railroad resources
- Markings
- Rail shipping papers
- The emergency response process
- Recovery operations
We will have the UPRR training cars and teach first responders how to apply the emergency C-kits and Midland capping kits in an emergency. Members of the UP Hazmat team along with Emergency Response Contractors will be teaching the course.

Description
First responders will learn about railroad operations, hazards, and safety rules. Rail hazmat safety and emergency response procedures are reviewed. Responders will be provided with helpful information to better comprehend the locomotive tactics for emergency response with fires and operations of equipment. The instructor will dive into the vital safety standards first responders need to know.
First responders will learn about the anatomy of general service and pressure and non-pressure tank cars including protective housings, valves and fittings, truck components, safety appliances, jacket, shell and head construction, placards and markings. First responders will learn about potential leak scenarios for chlorine, LPG, rail tank car valves and fittings and how to mitigate those leaks. Install the Emergency Kit "C" and Midland Kit on pressure tank car valve arrangements for standard and next generation (dual valve system) assemblies.
Important Details
Required Safety Gear: Work boots and gloves are required. Hard hats, bunker gear, and helmets optional.

Be at the site by 8:30 AM for registration. Depending on registration and training needs, the training schedule may be adjusted prior to event.
