Description

Classroom Sessions 

Railroad 101: Learn about railroad operations, hazards, and safety rules. Rail hazmat safety and emergency response procedures are reviewed.  

AskRail® Mobile App: Learn about The AskRail smartphone app - a safety tool giving first responders immediate access to accurate, timely data about what type of hazardous materials a railcar is carrying.  

Field Exercises 

Field Exercise 1 (Understanding Tank Cars): Learn about the anatomy of general service and pressure tank cars including protective housings; valves and fittings; tank components; safety appliances; jacket, shell, and head construction; placards and markings.  

Field Exercise 2 (Locomotive Emergency Response): An overview of responding to emergencies involving a locomotive.  

Field Exercise 3 (Chlorine Institute Emergency Response Kit “C”): Learn about potential leak scenarios for chlorine rail tank car valves and fittings and how to mitigate those leaks. Install the Emergency Kit “C” on chlorine tank car valve arrangements for standard and next generation (dual valve system) assemblies. 

Field Exercise 4 (Midland & Indian Springs Emergency Response Kits): Learn about potential leak scenarios for flammable gas tank car valves and fittings and how to mitigate those leaks. Install the Midland and Indian Springs Emergency Response Kits on a typical flammable gas assembly. 

Drill: Rail related drill for emergency responders utilizing appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), checking for leaks on tank car valves, and utilizing emergency response capping kits.   

 

Important Details

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (Field Exercises): required for hands-on workshop. Solid shoes, preferably high-top boots are recommended, and full-length pants are required. No sandals are permitted. Gloves, hard hats, and safety glasses are optional but recommended.    

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT (Drill): If you would like to participate in the drill during the training you will need to bring your own SCBA, you can utilize Level A training suits, Level A suits that are expired or did not pass pressure test, Encapsulated Level B, and LION MT94. Note: During this drill there will not be any live releases of any chemicals. Any simulated leaks will be with water or air.

Please advise the instructor(s) of any pre-existing medical condition(s) that may preclude you from participating in any field exercise. Stay hydrated and alert.

Be at the site by 9:00 AM for registration. Class will begin promptly at 9:30 AM.

Depending on registration and training needs, the training schedule may be adjusted prior to event.
