Rail Safety and Ammonia Emergency Response Training & Live-Release Drill

Overview
Training includes:
- Classroom instruction
- Hands-on training elements
- Live release ammonia drill
- Complimentary lunch
You only need to register for one session. Each session will present the same information and is intended to cover multiple fire department shifts.
Note: The drill in the afternoon will be held at another location, the address will be provided at the training following lunch. All attendees need to report to the classroom portion of training in the morning. You are responsible for your own transportation between training locations.

Description
Classroom Sessions:
- Case Studies: Overview of CSX incidents and the response considerations for each.
- AskRail® Mobile App: Learn about The AskRail smartphone app - a safety tool giving first responders immediate access to accurate, timely data about what type of hazardous materials a railcar is carrying.
- Ammonia Properties & Emergency Response:An overview of anhydrous ammonia, including its chemical and physical properties, placards, labels, containers, tank construction, and the hazards and potential outcomes associated with an anhydrous ammonia incident.
Field Exercises:
- Tank Car Fittings/Valves/Housings: Conducted using TRANSCAER/CSX's hazmat training trailer. This training focuses on familiarization with various valves and fittings within housings on pressure and general service tank cars.
- Midland & Indian Springs ERK Workshop: Learn about potential leak scenarios for flammable gas tank car valves and fittings and how to mitigate those leaks. Install the Midland and Indian Springs Emergency Response Kits on a typical flammable gas assembly.
- Ammonia Drill: Live release ammonia drill for participants to practice and perform basic control and confinement operations, including tarp and cover. Decontamination and air monitoring will also be incorporated into the drill.
Important Details
Required PPE for Drill Participants (MUST BRING WITH YOU):
Note: All participants are required to bring their own PPE to the drill. Prince William County Fire Department and TRANSCAER will not be providing PPE for the drill.
- All Drill Participants: SCBA
- Operations Level Drill Participants: Turnout Gear or Level B, plus a material/cotton-type glove & chemical gloves. TRANSCAER will provide cotton gloves and chemical gloves onsite for the drill.
- Technician Level Drill Participants: Level A or Encapsulated Level B + plus a material/cotton-type glove & chemical gloves. You can utilize Level A suits that are expired or did not pass pressure test at this drill. LION MT94 suits are allowed
- No Level A training suits are allowed (these are the suits that are specifically marked training use only).
- All PPE will be subject to pre-evolution inspection to ensure the safety of all participants.
*Must be Technician Level to enter the live release area of the ammonia drill.
*Operations Level can participate in decontamination and air monitoring.
Please advise the instructor(s) of any pre-existing medical condition(s) that may preclude you from participating in any field exercise. Stay hydrated and alert.
Be at the site by 7:30 AM for registration. Class will begin promptly at 8:00AM.
