Overview

Training includes:

  • Classroom instruction provided by Operation LifeSaver, Inc.
  • Tank Car and Locomotive Overviews provided by CPKC, Union Pacific Railroad and CN Railway
  • Lunch will be provided by TRANSCAER.
  • Certificates will be provided via email following electronic event evaluation form
  • Earn your TRANSCAER Challenge coin at the end of the session

You only need to register for one session. All topics are covered within each 6.5-hour session. Multiple sessions are offered in order to accommodate the multiple shifts of the fire departments.

Prior to attending this training, it is recommended (but not required) that you have either attended or completed an online Railroad 101 training to learn about railroad operations, hazards, and safety rules.

Description

Classroom Sessions: 

Railroad Case Studies: Several case studies from past incidents will be reviewed. Through a tabletop discussion attendees will learn about the response considerations for each incident. 

Train Consist Overview: Learn how to read a train consist and the critical information that it will provide emergency responders during a response to an incident on the railroad. 

AskRail® Mobile App: Learn about the AskRail smartphone app - a safety tool giving first responders immediate access to accurate, timely data about what type of hazardous materials a railcar is carrying. 

Field Exercises:

Field Exercise 1 (Flat Car– Fittings/Valves/Housing Overview): This training focuses on familiarization with various valves and fittings within housings on pressure and general service tank cars. 

Field Exercise 2 (Tank Car Build/Design/Identification/Field Assessment): This training focuses on familiarization with the design and build of pressure and general service tank cars, how to identify the type of tank car, and how to conduct a field damage assessment.  

Locomotive Emergency Response: An overview of responding to emergencies involving a locomotive. 

 

Important Details

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: A hard hat, safety glasses, safety vest, and work boots are required for the field exercises. Gloves are optional but recommended.

Please advise the instructor(s) of any pre-existing medical condition(s) that may preclude you from participating in any field exercises. Stay hydrated and alert.

Be at the site by 8:00 AM for registration. Class will begin promptly at 8:30AM. 

The class size is limited to 60 per day. 

Parking: Park in the Brewers 2 parking lot (which is the nearest of the Preferred Parking lots) and enter American Family Field through the Left Field Gate Entrance. See attached map and directions.
